One of the most annoying aspects of Windows 10 (W10) is the difficulty required to do some of the most basic and important configuration and maintenance tasks which used to be simple and straight forward. A perfect example of this is User accounts. It’s a very important part of the operating system especially if more than one person uses the PC. Not to mention the security issue it creates if you have anything in there you don’t want others to see.
To begin with, I strongly advise that W10 users do NOT create or use a Microsoft account. To simplify my reasons, let’s just say it’s a HUGE privacy and security concern. I happen to want to protect my privacy as much as possible from all the services and other companies I do business with. Especially huge controlling computer and Internet service companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, AT&T, etc.
So, if you already created a W10 account using a Microsoft account, I advise that you delete this account and create a new account that is not Microsoft based. This may be a bit tricky but it’s not too difficult.
Since W10 requires at least one “administrator” account, you can’t just delete your account if it’s the only one that has administrator privileges. Only administrators can delete and create accounts so there HAS to be at least one on every W10 installation.
To create another administrator account, first right click on the Windows Start Button (WSB), and then click on the “Settings” option. Then click on “Accounts” from the options, and Your Info will be automatically shown. From here, you can verify whether your account is linked to a Microsoft account or not, as well as if your account is an administrator or not.
Next, click on “Family & others” to view other User accounts on your W10 installation. If you have any “Family” accounts, you should delete them because these will by default be linked to a Microsoft account.
To create another Administrator account, click on “Add someone else to your PC”. Then click on “I don’t have this person’s sign in information” followed by clicking on “Add a user without a Microsoft account”. From there it’s very straightforward; just enter a unique User Name, and an optional password.
If your W10 User account is linked to a Microsoft account, at this point you will need to log off and log back in using the new account you just created. One way to do this is right click on WSB, then selecting “Shut down or sign out”, finally selecting “Sign Out”.
Now go back to the “Accounts” part off of the “Settings” menu. Again click on the “Family & other people” option. You should see the old account so select it by clicking there. From here you can simply click “Remove” and your old account will be removed.
