If you have already updated your PC’s operating system to Windows 10, there happens to be glitch in the latest version which may affect your PC.  This major update is generally known as “Creator’s Update” and is also known as version 1709.  This update began rolling out around the beginning of 2018 so you can look now to see if you have a problem or not.

To check and see what version of Windows 10 your PC is presently using, either left or right click on the Start button, then choose Settings (or the little Gear Icon).  Then choose System, then click on About.  Now you will see lots of detailed info about your PC, so page down and at the bottom you will see Windows Specifications.  By this time your PC should be running Version 1709.

Here are the two main issues that I will describe:

Issue #1:  Some PCs may experience random rebooting while otherwise seemingly working well.   From what I have read, the problem seems to affect older PCs more often.  Mine would not produce any sound nor the famous BSD, just a two second blank screen followed by a soft reboot.

If you are experiencing annoying reboots, try checking into your power settings.  To adjust your power settings, right click on the Windows button, then select Settings then select System.  From the menu on the left, now select Power and Sleep.  Verify that both options on the right of the screen are set to Never.   For this solution, disable the PC from ever sleeping nor do you want the display screen to turn off.  Now down below these options, click on Additional Power Settings.  Select a power plan, usually Balanced.  Click on Change Plan Settings.  Then click on Change Advanced power settings.  then click on Power Button and Lid.  Make sure both the sleep and power buttons cause the PC to shut down.  Some PCs have a problem when they are restarted after sleeping.  If your problem goes away, you know that you PC should not be allowed to sleep.  Instead just have the PC fully shut down.

Issue #2:  Your PC is having a problem if the update to Creators Edition Version 1709 has repeatedly failed.  I spent many hours researching the issue.   If you aren’t running Version 1709, go back to Windows Settings, and this time click on Update & Security.  Click on Windows Update, then select View installed update history.  Read through the log and look for Failed Updates.

If your PC is having a problem installing the update, there are a couple of things you can try.  For my situation, none of these things worked.  There is a Microsoft utility that tries to troubleshoot the Update issue.  One other thing to try is to check the integrity of your system files using the Microsoft system repair tool.  If your storage has a corrupted system file, that could be an issue.

One other possibility is to use the Windows 10 installation tool.  For me, the only thing that worked was to update the system using an Installation Disk for Version 1709.  Simply boot up your PC and insert the disk.  If you are having a problem obtaining a Windows Version 1709 installation disk, feel  free to contact me and I will see what can be done.
